Fantasy Football 2016: Week 14 Starts & Sits

The time has come. It’s either Round 1 or the final week of the regular season for fantasy players. Here’s a few tips to help you advance.

Starts

Carson Palmer, QB, Arizona – Carson Palmer has finally come alive over the past three weeks after an abysmal start to the season. He’s thrown seven touchdowns over the past three games compared to nine in his first eight games. He’s going against a Dolphins defense that’s given up seven passing touchdowns in the past two weeks. Look for Palmer to have a big day in Week 14.

Ladarius Green, TE, Pittsburgh – I usually don’t go all in on a player after one successful game, but Ladarius Green is an exception for a couple reasons. He’s a talented player with a talented quarterback that is desperately looking for another talented target in the passing game. The Steelers have been desperately trying to find a third option behind Antonio Brown and LeVeon Bell and Green looks to be that guy. He showed plenty of promise backing up Antonio Gates in San Diego, but was kept out due to injury for the majority of this season. Green reeled in six receptions on 11 targets for 110 yards and a touchdown in Week 13. It’s been a shallow pool of tight ends this season and Green makes for a great option for owners looking for help at the position.

Todd Gurley, RB, Los Angeles – This is really Todd Gurley’s final stand from a fantasy perspective. The 2015 NFL Rookie of the Year has yet to have a 100 yard performance for the dreadful Los Angeles Rams this season. But Gurley has a matchup with the Atlanta Falcons this week, who have given up the 2nd most points to running backs this season. If Gurley can come through, his championship matchup with the San Francisco 49ers will be too good to pass up. If he doesn’t pull through, he’s borderline droppable for the remainder of the playoffs. I have faith in Gurley this week. The Rams offense needs to to something to justify Jeff Fisher’s contract extension and I believe this will be the week they come alive. Gurley should be able to produce as a RB2 this week.

Terrelle Pryor, WR, Cleveland – Robert Griffin III’s return to the lineup shouldn’t affect Pryor’s status as the top option in the Cleveland offense. He’s carried an otherwise lifeless group through the season so far and it’s unlikely the Browns change their entire gameplan just because RG3 is back. Pryor’s status is no different than with any of the other quarterbacks Cleveland has trotted out there this season.

Cincinnati Defense – RG3’s return also shouldn’t affect the status of the defenses playing against the Browns. The Bengals defense was the jackpot of the waiver wire as far as defensive streaming is concerned and a must-start in Week 14. Owners should look to pick up San Diego and Buffalo in the coming weeks, the Browns remaining fantasy season opponents.

Sits

Marcus Mariota, QB, Tennessee – Any owners who dropped Marcus Mariota during his bye week may have made the right call. While he’s been a fantasy monster this year, the schedule down the stretch won’t do him any favors. The Titans take on the Broncos this week and the Chiefs next week, two very tough matchups for the second year quarterback. A championship week bout with the Jacksonville Jaguars may be promising, but owners should not feel guilty about cutting ties with Mariota at this point.

Colin Kaepernick, QB, San Francisco – Is it possible to trust a quarterback that went 1 for 5 with four yards against the Chicago Bears? Even if it was just a fluke game for Kaepernick, he’s not somebody that should be trusted in the fantasy playoffs, even with a decent matchup against the New York Jets this week.

Allen Robinson, WR, Jacksonville – If you’ve made it this far despite drafting Robinson, congratulations. If you still plan on starting him in Week 14, that’s probably not the best idea. Robinson has been borderline useless in fantasy this season (not entirely his fault) and a Week 14 date with Xavier Rhodes and the Minnesota Vikings won’t be his comeback game. He’s droppable in 10 team leagues if there’s a better waiver option out there.

Brandon Marshall, WR, New York Jets – Another draft bust, Brandon Marshall shouldn’t even be considered as a fantasy option in Week 14. While he’s shown flashes, we haven’t seen any visible chemistry between him and the new Jets quarterback Bryce Petty. There’s plenty of better guys out there.

Rob Kelley, RB, Washington – After dominating the Packers for 117 yards and three touchdowns in Week 11, Kelley has been nowhere to be found. He’s totaled just 100 yards and zero touchdowns over the past two games and has a matchup with an Eagles defense that has only allowed one 100 yard performance this year. Kelly is a low end flex play at best.
