Week 5 NFC West roundup: Division lead cut

The entire NFC West gained some ground on the Seattle Seahawks after Week 5. The Seahawks had a heart-breaking loss against the Indianapolis Colts, 34-28, which dropped them to 4-1 on the season. The St. Louis Rams improved to 2-3 after pulling off a 34-20 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Arizona Cardinals dominated the Panthers’ offense and beat Carolina, 22-6. The Cardinals are now above .500 with a 3-2 record. The San Francisco 49ers also hit the 3-2 mark with an impressive 34-3 victory over the Houston Texans.

Team Notes:

  • Seattle Seahawks: Russell Wilson passed for 210 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Wilson and Marshawn Lynch each rushed for 102 yards. The Seahawks’ defense couldn’t find an answer for Andrew Luck and T.Y. Hilton; they connected five times for 140 yards and two touchdowns. Jermaine Kearse blocked a punt out of the end zone to give the Seahawks a safety. The Colts would match it with a field goal blocked by Delano Howell and was returned for a touchdown.
  • St. Louis Rams: Sam Bradford passed for 222 yards and had three touchdowns. Rookie runningback Zac Stacy made his debut as a starter and rushed for 78 yards on 14 attempts. Austin Pettis found the end zone twice. Safety Matt Giordano returned an interceptions 82 yards for a touchdown. James Laurinaitis led the team in tackles with eight and had an interception.
  • Arizona Cardinals: Carson Palmer struggled passing for 175 yards, one touchdown and had three interceptions. The defense controlled the game limiting the Panthers to a total of six points. Calais Campbell sacked Cam Newton in the end zone for a safety. Daryl Washington was the player of the game on his return from suspension, racking up nine tackles, two sacks and an interception. Karlos Dansby added eight tackles, two sacks and an interception of his own.
  • San Francisco 49ers: Frank Gore rushed for 81 yards and one touchdown. Vernon Davis acquired most of the passing yards reeling in 88 yards and one touchdown. Michael Wilhoite and NaVorro Bowman combined for a total of 26 tackles. Tramaine Brock had a pick-six that was returned 18 yards to the end zone.
