Week 2 preview: Offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti is making an impact for the St. Louis Rams

The St. Louis Rams earned a notable 34-31 overtime victory over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1. Now where does the credit go? Everywhere. An argument could be made for quarterback Nick Foles, defensive tackle Aaron Donald and countless others. Some credit should also go to offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti.

Talented players are nice, but proper coaching is necessary as well. Take last season for example, the offense was predictable, bland and lacked a pulse. True, the Rams did swap out offensive linemen and have a new starting quarterback, but the overall offense has a different feel to it. Part of the reason is because the playcalling has changed tremendously.

When was the last time you were actually excited about the Rams offense taking the field? The answer is probably since the Greatest Show on Turf era, and that’s entirely too long ago. Cignetti has already accomplished what former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer failed to do in the three-year tenure with the Rams, and that’s diversifying the playcalling.

If you look back at the game film against the Seahawks, the offense rarely did anything fancy. They attempted to hand the ball off to wide receiver Tavon Austin, but it wasn’t that effective against a speedy Seahawks defense. In truth, the playcalling may have been simple, but it was unpredictable. It would have been obvious if the Rams relied solely on the passing attack since both Tre Mason and Todd Gurley were out with injuries. Despite that, both rushing and passing attacks were pretty even. Foles had 27 pass attempts while there were 26 rush attempts with Benny Cunningham leading the way with 16 of them.

This is certainly leading into a positive direction as the Rams prepare for the Washington Redskins in Week 2. If the Rams play with the same level of intensity, and with the same balanced offense, it could be a blowout in Washington.
