Week 2: Los Angeles Rams fall 27-20 at home to Washington Redskins

The Los Angeles Rams dropped their first game of the season 27-20 to Washington Redskins on Sunday, September 17. Head Sean McVay suffered his first defeat at the helm of the team.

Quarterback Jared Goff completed 15 of 25 passes for 228 yards, one touchdown and an interception to lead the Rams. Meanwhile, running back Todd Gurley paced L.A. with 88 yards on 16 carries, including a 1-yard touchdown run early in the game. Gurley also featured in the passing game. He caught three passes for 48 yards and a nice catch and run for the Rams’ second score.

However, the Redskins’ running game won this game for Washington. The Redskins ran for 228 yards on a front-seven believed to be the Rams’ defensive strength and averaged 5.8 yards per carry. Running back Rob Kelley rushed for 78 yards on 12 carries to lead Washington. He left the game in the second quarter, and his replacement Chris Thompson compiled 77 yards and two touchdowns.

The Rams tied the game at 20-20 in the fourth quarter on a 40-yard Greg Zuerlein field goal. Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins responded by taking his team downfield for the game-winning drive. He topped off the drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Ryan Grant with 1:49 remaining.

Goff had one last chance to lead the Rams downfield, but he stared down wide receiver Cooper Kupp early in the drive, resulting in his lone interception of the game.

Next week

The Rams will attempt to shake off the loss with a short week trip up north to face the rival San Francisco 49ers on Thursday, September 21 on the NFL Network at 5:25 p.m. PT.
