Top 5 free agent FS the Los Angeles Rams should consider

The Los Angeles Rams have some key decisions to make at the free safety position. Lamarcus Joyner is a free agent and will likely command a hefty contract. He didn’t impress last season, but did do well in previous seasons. That said, here are five options at the free safety position:

1. Earl Thomas, Seattle Seahawks, 29

Earl Thomas was a key member of the Seahawks’ “Legion of Boom” era. The Rams could add championship experience from a player hungry to prove his doubters wrong. His season prematurely ended in 2018 when he suffered a fractured left leg in a Week 4 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. Thomas is a six-time Pro Bowler that would solidify the starting secondary as a dominant group.

2. Tyrann Mathieu, Houston Texans, 26

The “Honeybadger” had an excellent 2018 season, recording 89 combined tackles and two interceptions in 16 games. At 26 years of age, Mathieu is entering his prime. If the Rams are willing to commit to a longer term, then Mathieu may be the right player given his excellent covering skills. Even though he has dealt with personal issues in the past, Mathieu is entering his seventh year and has become one of the more versatile safeties in the league.

3. Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Washington Redskins, 26

Another player about to enter his prime is Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. The Rams will likely need to commit long-term with him too. His impact was somewhat limited in 2018 splitting time between the Green Bay Packers and Washington Redskins. He probably won’t cost nearly as much as Thomas or Mathieu. His work ethic and drive could be a great fit for the Rams in 2019. Dix recorded 93 tackles and three interceptions between Washington and Green Bay in 2018.

4. Glover Quin, Detroit Lions, 33

A short-term FS option is Glover Quin. The 10-year veteran has played FS and DB at times throughout his career. Quin recorded 74 tackles in 16 games for Detroit in 2018. Quin may be a cap-friendly player looking to join a Super Bowl contender. This may give Les Snead more of a cushion when scouting for a rookie FS during the 2019 NFL Draft. Signing a younger player is ideal, but the Rams must consider the salary cap.

5. Lamarcus Joyner, Los Angeles Rams, 28

The Rams could bring back Joyner if the market doesn’t overpay for him. Joyner didn’t have a memorable season, but did well at times. He earned 78 tackles and one interception, which aren’t mind-blowing stats but are decent. Familiarity may be the best option if the price is right.
