2016-Present

Taking a look at Scott Linehan

Is it a case of history to repeating itself? Could Scott Linehan become the coach of the Rams for a second time? Given what has transpired with the Dallas Cowboys with his excellent playcalling this season, Linehan has become a hot name in coaching searches in recent weeks.

Linehan was hired by the then St. Louis Rams in 2006 to run the team. Linehan inherited a team that was in transition, long departed from the days of the “Greatest Show on Turf.” It was a disastrous two plus seasons for Linehan as the Rams slipped from 8-8 in 2006 to 3-13 in 2007. In 2008, after suffering an 0-4 start where the Rams mustered just 39 points in their first four games, Linehan was promptly fired.

Linehan spent five seasons as offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions where his offensive playcalling helped turned the Lions fortunes around from an 0-16 laughing stock shortly before his arrival to a 10-6 playoff team just three seasons later.

Upon the Lions’ firing of head coach Jim Schwartz after the 2013 season, Linehan became offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys in 2014. Linehan’s playcalling this season with the rookie duo of Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott has propelled the Cowboys to the top seed in the NFC playoff picture. The Cowboys’ run-oriented attack helped Elliott produce one of the NFL’s finer seasons by a rookie in years.

The reasoning for Linehan becoming a viable head coaching candidate for the Rams is clear. The Rams, like the Cowboys, have a young quarterback and running back in place. Linehan’s offensive expertise could help take Jared Goff to the next level and help bring back Todd Gurley to the 2015 form where he tore up NFL defenses as a rookie. The challenge for Linehan would be to do it with a far less talented offensive front line. A potential hiring of Linehan as head coach could help turn around a Rams offense that has been among the NFL’s worst in the past two seasons. Whether or not he can lead this team and shake the memories of his first tenure with the team remains to be seen.
