Rams K Greg Zuerlein out for season with herniated disk

The Los Angeles Rams placed Pro Bowl kicker Greg Zuerlein on the injured reserve due to a herniated disk on Wednesday, December 20. The Rams signed former Penn State kicker Sam Ficken as his replacement as per NFL Insider, Adam Schefter.

This is devastating news for the Rams’ special teams, because Zuerlein currently leads the NFL in scoring. He ranks first in the league in field goals made with 38 and in extra points with 44. Zuerlein’s powerful leg provided the Rams with the option to settle for 60-plus yard attempts. Not many kickers in the league possess that strength or accuracy.

The Rams are on the cusp of their first playoff berth since 2004. They can win the NFC West with a victory over the Tennessee Titans or a Seattle Seahawks loss. Losing a kicker may not seem that significant, but the Rams will miss “Legatron” in clutch kicking situations.
