2016-Present

Player Profile: LB Connor Barwin

The Los Angeles Rams and free agent linebacker Connor Barwin agreed to a one-year deal worth $6.5 million, as reported by Myles Simmons last week.

Barwin spent the last four seasons playing with the Philadelphia Eagles, splitting time between linebacker and defensive end during his tenure. Barwin will reunite with Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. He played under Phillips after being drafted by the Houston Texans in 2009.

Barwin’s best year in the NFL came in 2014. He recorded 14.5 sacks and earned a Pro Bowl bid for the Eagles. Unfortunately, after changing positions in 2015, his production dropped and the team let him go. The question becomes whether or not Phillips can revive Barwin’s career?

Phillips was the coach that moved Barwin to linebacker in 2011. More notably, Phillips saw Barwin’s potential playing on the outside where he could wreak havoc on opposing offenses. After leaving Houston, Barwin’s first few years in Philadelphia yielded him similar successes until being moved back to defensive end prior to the start of the 2016 season. Under Phillips’ 3-4 defensive scheme, it is expected that Barwin will return to linebacker.

While it is a low-risk, one-year gamble for the club, the feeling is that the Rams overpaid for Barwin’s services given the lack of production from the 30-year-old in recent seasons. Barwin compiled only five sacks and 20 tackles in 16 games last season. Time will tell if his production will increase with Barwin moving back to linebacker with the Rams.

In eight NFL seasons, Barwin has recorded 50.5 sacks and 240 tackles, playing for the Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles.
