L.A. Rams pick up options on Tavon Austin & Alec Ogletree

The Los Angeles Rams picked up fifth-year options on wide receiver Tavon Austin and linebacker Alec Ogletree. Both players were taken by the Rams in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

The option will pay Ogletree roughly $8 million during the 2017 season, a deal that both Ogletree and the Rams should be happy about. Ogletree led the Rams in tackles in each of his first two seasons before appearing in just four games last season due to injury. He’s proved to be a versatile defender and is the best linebacker on the team right now. If he isn’t affected by the injury this season, the Rams can expect big things from Ogletree. This is a very fair price to pay.

Things get a little trickier when it comes to Tavon Austin. Austin has proven to be a valuable part of the Rams offense and is a weapon on the ground, through the air, and on special teams. However, he doesn’t have the ability to be the focal point of an elite passing game, and the Rams will be paying him like one at $12 million for the 2017 season. Austin will be worth the money if he can make a big leap in 2016, or if the Rams can add a legit No. 1 option to play alongside him. Keeping Austin for another year wasn’t a bad move, but it is a steep price to pay for a player like Austin.

Picking up these options help secure two of the more valuable players on the Rams roster for another season. Mandatory minicamp in Los Angeles begins June 14th.
