L.A. Week: Excited for the future, feeling bittersweet about the past

The Rams have moved on from St. Louis and returned home to Los Angeles. The Los Angeles fans have regained their team and the St. Louis fans are in the market for a new one. For a large portion of sports fans, location is everything and when a team leaves their city, they will no longer support that franchise. As a fan from Connecticut, I represent the group of Rams fans that will follow this franchise no matter where they play, whether its Los Angeles or St. Louis or the Australian Outback.

This doesn’t mean that the move is meaningless to me. On one hand, I’m ecstatic. Often times a player who is stuck in mediocrity just needs a change of scenery to make the leap to the next level. Who says it isn’t the same for an entire franchise? The last time Jeff Fisher was a part of a moving franchise, he took the Tennessee Titans to the Super Bowl in their first year in Tennessee, only to lose to none other than the St. Louis Rams.

I’m excited for this team and I’m excited for this fan base. There are plenty of Los Angeles fans who have been craving for football to return to their city, and many of them have been Rams fans their whole life. For the team itself, I think this move is nothing but a positive.

But the move as a whole is not all positive. A part of me feels depressed about this move. It’s depressing for the St. Louis fans who supported this team no matter what, whether it was cheering them to a Super Bowl or cheering for them throughout countless losing seasons. The city of St. Louis did everything they could to support this franchise and keep their team at home. Unfortunately, it became more and more clear over the course of the 2015 season that Kroenke wanted to be the driving force in bringing the NFL back to Los Angeles, and the city of St. Louis was the biggest casualty of the move. I feel for the St. Louis fanbase, and I hope that we can still count on many of you to support this Rams squad.

I’m ready to see the rebirth of the Los Angeles Rams. This team has plenty of young talent, and hopefully a move can allow some of these guys to take their game to the next level.
