2017 Draft Profile: CB Fabian Moreau

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

With the 2017 NFL draft less than one week away, the Los Angeles Rams’ plans are still unknown. The Rams gave up their first round pick in this year’s draft after trading for the first overall pick (Jared Goff) in the 2016 NFL Draft. As a result, the Rams are relegated to the 37th pick (5th in the second round). Who is most likely available on the draft board at that point? As mentioned in previous articles, one of the cornerbacks potentially available in the second round is UCLA’s Fabian Moreau.

Moreau is projected to land somewhere in the second round. He would excel as a slot cornerback in the NFL and his numbers help show that.  Moreau clocked in his 40-yard dash at 4.35 at the combine. His broad jump measured at 136 inches, which showed just how athletic Moreau is for a cornerback. Moreau’s biggest strength is his ability to use his speed and athleticism in coverage where he can go toe-to- toe with other wide receivers of similar physical stature. Scouts say he also uses his physical strength to disrupt the rhythm of most wide receivers in their routes.

However, Moreau possesses some weaknesses that he must work on at the next level. Although scouts have mentioned that the former Bruin has improved his coverage skills from 2014 to now, there is still plenty for him to build on if he wants to be successful at the NFL level. Moreau also must improve his ball skills, because he tends to have problems finding out where deep throws are made by opposing quarterbacks. He Bruin tends to get flustered and lose his positioning on the field when being turned around in coverage. Moreau’s overall field awareness is something that must get better at the NFL level.

Despite these weaknesses, Moreau’s overall physical ability is something that would be hard pressed to pass up should he be available. Several draft boards project Moreau going somewhere in the second round where the Rams have the fifth pick (37th overall).
