Analyzing L.A. Rams QB Jared Goff’s Week 1 performance

The Los Angeles Rams crushed the Indianapolis Colts 46-9 in Week 1 of the 2017 NFL season. Rams quarterback Jared Goff picked up his first win as a starter.

On the stats sheet, Goff completed 21 of 29 passes for 306 yards with one touchdown pass and no interceptions. Goff only got sacked once, and his overall rating came in at an impressive 117.9. The former No. 1 pick looked efficient and put up impressive numbers, but did he look as good as his stats indicate?

One of Goff’s biggest problems last year was his inability to throw accurately find the wide open receiver. He constantly threw behind his intended receivers or waited just one second too long and overcompensated. That overcompensation led to poor incompletions or worse interceptions. Last Sunday against the Colts, Goff proved to be an accurate and confident passer. Eight different receivers caught a pass from Goff, which indicates that his field vision has improved tremendously over last season. It helps that he now plays in a much more quarterback-friendly offensive system under the new coaching staff, but his vision was clearly better in Week 1.

It also helps that his vision has improved with an improved offensive line. With Goff suffering only one sack, the second-year quarterback exhibited better instincts on when to hold onto the football, when to throw it away or when to check down. Goff made every right decision and successfully avoided many 3rd and long situations.

Last season, Goff looked scared to throw the ball downfield. In truth, his previous coaching staff failed him across the board, whether it be in playcalling or in his confidence. It’s clear that things have changed for Goff. Goff completed four “deep completions” in 29 pass attempts. In his rookie campaign, Goff completed only four deep completions in 205 pass attempts. Whatever work head coach Sean McVay and the offensive coaching staff did with Goff in the offseason paid off in Week 1.

It’s important to note that the Colts fielded a poor defense, but Goff’s play in Week 1 is definitely a sign of encouragements for the Rams coaching staff and the fans. I cannot claim that the second coming of the “Greatest Show on Turf” is here, but Goff looked very much the NFL quarterback on Sunday. The question is whether or not he can do it again in Week 2 and moving forward.
