2017 Draft Profile: Utah safety Marcus Williams would be a solid addition to the L.A. Rams

The Los Angeles Rams have needs they must address in the secondary after letting a starting safety walk each of the last two seasons. They already need to make every pick count since they do not have a first round selection in this year’s draft. Utah safety Marcus Williams may be an answer to their dilemma.

Pros: Williams is a hard-hitting athletic safety with great ball skills. He loves to punish receivers when they cross his path in the open field, but he also possesses the athletic ability to go get the football when the time is right. He plays well in zone coverage, rarely letting receivers sneak past him when he’s the last line of defense. Williams possesses very good play recognition ability.

Williams brings a ton of experience along with him. He earned the starting safety job during his true freshman season at Utah and remained the starter for the next two years before declaring for the draft. He was named a 2016 Second Team All-American by Pro Football Focus.

Cons: Despite being 6’1, Williams only weighs 195 pounds, which is incredibly small for an NFL safety. This could prevent him from being the frightening hitter he was in college unless he bulks up a bit. His small frame will give him trouble shedding blocks and guarding tight ends.

In short, he really needs to hit the gym after the draft.

Overall: Williams has plenty of desirable skills that could help the Rams immediately, and his biggest weakness can be improved upon in the weight room. He can provide immediate depth at the safety position even at his current weight. With a few more pounds and a bit more experience playing at the highest level, it’s easy to imagine Williams being a starting safety in the NFL. The 20-year-old Williams should be available on Day 2 of the 2017 NFL Draft and would be a solid addition to the Rams.
