2014 Offseason: Five bubble players the Rams may cut

The St. Louis Rams’ general manager Les Snead has the daunting task of trimming the roster down from 90 players to eventually 53. With the preseason halfway gone, here’s a look at five bubble players who may not make the roster:

1. QB Garrett Gilbert – It’s still unclear if the Rams will keep two or three quarterbacks on the roster, but neither rookie Garrett Gilbert nor Austin Davis has really impressed anyone. In their defense, the backup offensive linemen haven’t provided them with enough time to get the ball out or to even think. Gilbert, in particular, hasn’t had much success, and if it ever comes down to a third string quarterback, the Rams would most likely be more comfortable with Davis stepping in rather than Gilbert.

2. WR Justin Veltung – Veltung has been gunning for a roster spot for the past couple of seasons, but the Rams have a stacked roster of wide receivers this year. The only reason a roster spot may be available is because Stedman Bailey is suspended for the first four games of the season, and he does not count against the roster. Still, it’s hard for him to separate himself when there isn’t much evidence to support him or opportunities to prove himself.

3. DT Matt Conrath – Conrath shocked Rams fans when he made the roster as an undrafted free agent back in 2012. Now the story on the defensive line is much different. The Rams just added even more talent at the defensive tackle position with rookie Aaron Donald and veteran Alex Carrington. The Rams are ridiculously talented on the defensive line in general, adding those two almost seems unfair. Don’t expect Conrath to be a free agent long if he is cut.

4. DE/LB Sammy Brown – Much like Conrath, Brown faces serious competition. He could stay on the roster if he performs well at the linebacker position. However, it may be a little tougher for him to crack the roster if the Rams value him more as a defensive end. It will come down to rookies Michael Sam and Ethan Westbrooks. The linebacker position is pretty thin in terms of depth, so Brown does still have a slight chance.

5. S Matt Daniels – Daniels has had to fight for a spot on the roster for the past three seasons. This year will most likely be disappointing to him since the Rams have a variety of safeties via the NFL Draft. Daniels hasn’t had many opportunities to prove himself due to injuries. While it may seem unfair, you can’t win if you can’t play. That is the nature of the business.
